After 2 long years, my colorful Nike flip-flops finally hit the bucket. I guess that last beach trip we had was too much for it to handle.
So Cris and I went shopping for a new pair in Rustans. After much ado, I decided on these black Cobian El Cap sandals:
Havaianas
I guess given I was looking for all-purpose “panlaspag” slippers; one could say that the Havaianas brand would be a prime candidate. They have a good balance between style, simplicity, and all-purpose-usage. Their classic shape and “dimensions” have always been simple but elegant, but the reason why I didn’t consider them was that I always thought they were too expensive for what they truly were. 1 Plus literally EVERYONE had them.
As nice as they look, the sum of their parts are ultimately just as valuable as a sub-100 peso pair of local Spartan sandals you can buy even in the most impoverished areas of our country. Simply put, I submit that Havaianas are ridiculously marked up Spartan sandals. They feel the same, and are just as durable as their Spartan equivalent. The only difference is where they’re made, and the print options they come with.
I’d sooner just cough up extra dough to buy hideously looking Crocs; because at least with those you can see an attempt to put some engineering effort into their products. Or better yet, go really radical and get some Dopies
Crocs
Speaking of Crocs, I was actually considering [against my better judgement] to get a pair of Crocs slippers 2 And I must not fail stress the fact that I was only considering their slipper line, not their clog line… ever!. And while the Crocs slipper line doesn’t look as hideous as their mainstream clogs, I have to say it the brand as a whole still looked too hideous for me to purchase.
My motto is that once you think something to be stylish because of the brand and not the actual look then there’s something seriously wrong with you. Crocs (or at least their clog line, to me, only look good on children… and fat people. I do however, respect the people who wear them for comfort, for as long as they still have enough sense to admit how hideous they look. Anyone else claiming otherwise is deluding themselves.
Ultimately…
There were other brands to choose from, but ultimately, I ended up choosing between Sanuk and Cobian; as they were the brands that offered models that had both the comfort and style I was going after. In fact Sanuk was more comfortable if I had to pigeonhole the two, but the Sanuk models in question were too clunky compared to the streamlined Cobian model I ended up choosing.
You should’ve been there, I literally had multiple pairs of sandals sprawled on the floor, and I was trying one wit another and doing an “elimination” round on each until I ended up with the El Cap.
