The Way it Should Have Been

I’ve been wanting to redo some of my older songs after getting the T5, because the guitars literally sound like shit when compared to the newer ones I made. I actually started on a couple of them, but I was able to finish the remake for “The Way it Should Have Been”

As stated [verbatim] in the Music Section:

Reprise of “The Way it Should Have Been” (duh!) with the following changes:

  1. A bit faster tempo, so it’s about 20 seconds shorter than the original.
  2. Re-recorded the guitar part with my Taylor T5
  3. Changed the percussion section with better sounding instruments (via Reason)
  4. Added a very subtle ambient pad (via Cakewalk Rapture)
  5. Re-done the vocal track with some lyric changes

Over-all, this is a better version, and it’s just fun to compare it because it shows clearly how much my sound has changed from the last time I recorded it.

If you feel like it, compare it to the old one below:

THE WAY IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN (REPRISE)

03/20/2007 (originally written: 08/31/2003) Carlo Santos Theme: Complicated love

I Have you ever closed your eyes and see that special smile; the stuff dreams are made of? And finally seeing that canvas turned to flesh… Then it sends your heart beating and racing again.

But, you find out it’s something you can’t have; there’s a lot that goes around, Yet, still you try – knowing fully well that someone else was smiling back. Now you’ve ended something that you shouldn’t have.

CHORUS The way it should have been was never this ambiguous… no reading between the lines. It should have been you and her/I in that simple equation… all alone. Whispering sweet nothings ’til the break of dawn.

II After all is said and done… now you’ve become the villain. And it breaks your soul that her broken heart’s the one thing you can’t mend. You wallow in your guilt and pain. It should be so much simpler now – if her heart didn’t love the other ’til the end.

Still, you try to make the best of what is left, ‘coz you can’t let her go. But, you have got to take the pain whenever she says someone else’s name… and dream of the time it would be yours.

CHORUS

The way I should have been; was to never cause you any pain – But to wait my turn – even if that proved to be in vain. Yet, I cant help but take that chance just to be with you. And if that meant the same old risk – I would do it all again just to see you… …and I hope by then, you’d feel the same.

  1. Really sounds better. One request though. Could you include the lyrics as metadata in the file (if it is not too much trouble). Or if not, could you give us the lyrics to your other songs? And if they are here, could you just direct me to them? Sorry if I’m did not dig deep enough if they are already here. Thanks and keep ’em coming.

  2. Hmmm…I just listened to it and I think I like the previous version better. While this one does sound better “produced” (for lack of a better term), I like the “raw” quality of the original. Or maybe dahil lang mas nag-resonate sa’kin yun the first time I heard it since I was kinda going thru something that the song encapsulated perfectly. So kelan na ang “Your Majesty”? Hehehe

  3. @Punzi I started posting the lyrics of the songs in the blog ever since I got the T5 – so everything from Hiling already has its own individual page in the blog. The reason why I haven’t posted the older ones is because of what I’m doing now – it’s a good motivator to not post a page about it until I get to do reprise versions of the old songs.

@Arjay You’re the second person to say that! I guess meron talaga something about the original’s simplicity/raw-ness that works for it.

In any case, I’m not deleting the originals of any of my reprise versions precisely because of that fact.

  4. yep this one sounds nice but i’d have to agree with arjay, i too like the previous version – the flow of the song matched the message and the feeling perfectly (add to that the violins).

  5. Oh my, that makes it three people. I wonder what “rawness” exactly makes the old version more preferable.

I basically just redid the isntruments but retained the same arrangement. The only real difference is that it’s at a faster pace, and that added subtle ambient pad. And the latter is so subtle so I’m guessing that the real reason would be the speed of the song.

Unfortunately, the original version isn’t “radio friendly” (way past 5 minutes) And while I’m not saying that I’m going to get famous and will need radio-friendly songs – it doesn’t hurt to try to prepare all my songs as such. Hehehe

Have a say
