Abstraction

Abstraction is a term programmers like to use – the concept of which is basically to approach/tackle a problem CONCEPTUALLY rather than with specific tools. In other words, if applied properly, you’d be able to do whatever it is you intend to do without being tied to a specific requirement (e.g. “I can’t do this unless I have this specific piece of equipment”)

So why the hell am I talking about that right now? Nothing important, can’t a guy shoot the breeze once in a while? It’s been ages since I talked about something in the blog anyways 😉

But sure, let’s apply that a bit on a current experience. Read More

Keyport Slide

Uncrate is an evil site – it makes you spend without you realizing it. I ended up getting so much shit 1 Not everything was from Uncrate, though. because of it!

First, I appeased my sartorial urges by getting Wurkin Collar Stiffs. I also got myself a glorified bag-organizer in the form of the Nau Fluent Stash. I also indulged the photographer in me by getting a pimped out BlackRapid RS-7. 2 I actually already have an RS-Sport, but found out that it wasn’t compatible with modules. So I got the 7, then pimped it out with a BRAD, Buck, Joey J-2 and FastenR-T1 Even got a Spyderco Sharpmaker for maintaining my Waimea

But all those cannot compare to the awesomeness that is my new Keyport Slide

Is jailbreaking still worth the trouble?

So Apple has stepped up their game with iOS security yet again. It’s a bittersweet thing for me. Because I always root for the underdogs (the hackers) but it also makes me glad I stopped jailbreaking years ago.

From what I’ve read, it has come to a point where jailbreaking your device is just too much of a hassle than compared to just buying the Apps and being done with it.

Cuz that’s really what it all boils down to: the practicality of acquiring software. Read More

Getting Screens to work on my network

Ever since I was forced to use our DSL modem as a router (instead of the AirPort Extreme), I’ve been having DMZ 1 De-Militarized Zone and port forwarding issues. Apparently, these things don’t play nice on a double-NAT 2 Setting both as their own gateways setup.

The thing is, a while back, I bought this iOS app called Screens – and one of the awesome things it did was provide IP resolution anywhere without having to pay for a dynamic IP service. 3 The app itself wasn’t free, but that little feature came bundled with it. For those who don’t get the implications, it means I’ll be able to remotely connect to my PC REGARDLESS if it changes its IP – because the Screens gateway service will do the IP resolving for you.

Sufficed to say, I was never able to utilize this awesome feature because my said topology… until a few days ago. Read More

RIM vs Apple

That’s right, shit just got real – I’m going to give my thoughts on the whole iPhone vs. BlackBerry (BB) debate

Main reason is because I’m stuck at home right now on a friday night with nothing else to do. So might as well talk about tech like I usually do.

Next is that this particular topic, surprisingly, has been a recurring one. As you know, people usually ask my opinion when they plan to make “tech purchases” – and phones are no exception. Naturally, when it comes to Smartphones there are three choices: RIM, Apple or Google.

I’m not including Google (Android) in this debate because the type of people who consider getting Android devices are of a different social subset – they aren’t your normal consumers – in the same way same way that there are people who prefer to use Linux or any open source OS over anything more “commercial.”

In any case, I can totally engage in that debate if you really want me to, but for now, let’s stick with RIM’s BB and Apple’s iOS as the contenders – because these are the Smartphones that are getting most of the traction from the “regular joes.” Read More
