One of the drawbacks of being a “gadget freak” is you end up having more “necessities” than normal when up and about. 1 And by “normal,” I mean your keys, phone, and wallet.

I bring my iPad more often than not – then there’s the MiFi for internet connectivity. And to prevent any of those devices dying on me in the middle of the day, I bring a portable battery pack along.

All that – for a regular day.

It gets even more complicated when on a trip out of town/country. Apart form those already mentioned, one has to consider the need to use other gadgets for tasks that would normally be done at the end of the day (computer/laptop). And let’s not forget real cameras, whenever on an interesting “trip.”

I also think my being a pack-rat comes with the territory of having so much shit to bring along, so I pretty much have to accept that for the most part, I’ll never be “traveling light” in the truest sense of the phrase. What I can be though, is efficient.

Power

No one man should have all that power

You know you’re a serious gadget freak (yeah, I believe freak is the appropriate word now) if you end up needing portable power packs for the gadgets in your EDC (Every Day Carry)

Have you ever run out of juice on your cellphone and wished you had some way to charge them at that instant? Of course you have. And as you may have guessed, portable power packs 1 Otherwise known as powerbanks, portable batteries, external batteries, or whatever else phrase can describe a portable power source are “universal batteries” that can be used to power/charge [small] electronic devices.

These things are starting to be one of the necessities to us gadget freaks who have multiple electronic devices that need to be on all the time.

I just got my new powerbank the other day; the NewTrent IMP70D – which brings my total of powerbanks to 4. I thought doing a comparison would be helpful for readers that are interested in getting one of these nifty little things. I’ll be discussing the 3000mAh Opt PortaPower, the 6600mAh MiPow Power Tube 6600, the 6000mAh ZAGGsparq 2.0, and the 7000mAh New Trent IMP70D. Read More

Friday was MY DAY

Friday was a surprisingly “lucky” day for me.

Apart from being able to get a lot of work done with a very interesting project at work, I also was able to get my first check for this voiceover sideline thingie I’ve been doing for about a year now. (maybe less, but who keeps track, right?)

These were the “immediate results” of that day – but the story behind them is the more enjoyable part of it all.

Pogoplug

Being a Drobo owner, one of our newsletters mentioned a promo where DataRobotics collaborated with PogoPlug, a cloud-storage service. While I’m perfectly happy with Dropbox, Pogoplug offers something that I find really useful. So I decided to give it a whirl.

iPhone 4S Impressions

So I got myself a 4S… you know… because I fuckin’ can 😉 Just kidding, but that’s beside the point.

The point is I’m posting because my friends/readers wanna know what I think of it. Because there’s that whole “is the improvement worth replacing the my current iPhone with?”

There are two answers to that, depending on your “iPhone” if you’re using anything older than a 4, then yes – for the simple reason that even the iPhone 4 was already a drastic improvement over its predecessor. Now if you already have an iPhone 4, the answer would depend on what “feature” appeals to you – factoring in how you use your phone everyday.

Personally, I bought the 4S because of the improved camera. When it comes to photography, it’s very difficult to judge “incremental upgrades” at face value – because when it comes to photo quality, any upgrade, no matter how small – is always worth consideration. 1 A camera could have the same exact specifications but improve drastically in one area such as low light, and that to me already would be worth upgrading to

Then there’s a matter of Siri – which currently works exclusively with the 4S. I can only assume it’s part of Apple’s marketing strategy – as I see no reason why it wouldn’t be able to run (albeit slower) on even a non A5 chip. 2 Or at the very least, it should be able to work with the iPad2s – since they use the same chip.

So now that I’ve gotten to play with it, what do I think? Read on… Read More
