*Can’t wait to blast some demons!*
Doom 3 brings most “non-bleeding edge” systems to their knees. The inadequacy of my AXP2400, 1GB RAM, and GF4 Ti 4200 is glaringly obvious. I have to play it on 800×600 2xAA with NO special effects (shadows, particles, and bump-mipmapping) for my framerates to be “playable.”
I think I will soon have to put my photography on hold, and start treating my PC with some well deserved upgrades. Definitely a new CPU past 3Ghz (or equivalent, if I go AMD), and maybe I should try spending for a bleeding edge graphics card for once.
Easier said than done though. I’ll give myself a deadline… By Christmas, I should have been able to complete all the necessary upgrades.
The game is beginning to become a disappointment. I’m beginning to think that the only thing this game’s got going for it, is its eye-candy, which I can’t really appreciate since I had to turn off almost all the blasted graphical effects.
I’m a story person. Unlike my friend Joel, I don’t mind the gameplay so much – of course it does matter, but not as much as the story. If the gameplay makes the story unfold too slowly for me, then I lose interest. Ergo I usually make sure that I do not die, since that is the worst thing a game can do to interrupt the storyline. Any kind of cheat (except skipping levels, unless they’re impossible) is fine by me.
Anyways, back to DOOM3. The original DOOM had the concept of a dimensional gateway opening (by accident or whatever, it doesn’t matter), leaving the human inhabitants of whatever place in question in imminent danger. A few years later, Half Life released an EXCELLENT take on the same concept. And not only the story, but the incorporation of it to the gameplay was superb.
Now we have DOOM3. All the eye candy aside, ID Software is lucky that DOOM started the concept – otherwise I’d say DOOM3 was a Half Life wannabe. The feel of the game is similar to Half Life.
I still haven’t finished the game, so I am expecting some interesting twists in the plot. There BETTER be some twists, else DOOM3 will just demoted to “something like Half Life,” which is sad since ID was first with the “story.”
