UAAP ups and downs

Ok first off, I would like to congratulate the Blue Eagles for winning the game this afternoon (evening?) against Adamson. I must admit that it was a very impressive match. The Eagles definitely deserved that win as everyone indeed stepped up without Mr. Fonacier.

I was able to watch the last seconds of the 3rd quarter and the whole 4th through a TV – the group was in Italianni’s after singing at a wedding in San Agustin Church, Intramuros.

People I particulary enjoyed watching were Intal, and of course Mr. Tenorio. Though LA made the game winning shot, I couldn’t deny that Intal was an integral performer at the last quarter.

Again, congratulations to the team.

UPDATE: I will concede that this post is biased or even an overreaction. I will just trust the readers to excercise proper judgement of the deeper meaning I wish to convey. Indeed the claims are probably towards specific groups or people, but I won’t go that deep as it is not my intention to destroy reputations. Suffice to say, they should know who they are, and facts cannot manipulated or denied.

Having said that – it doesn’t let the school off the hook (and I’m not talking about the team but the school).

It started when we were to meet on the school grounds before going to the wedding.

“Larry this one’s for you!”

Double-u tee ef man!? Friggin streamers!? Can you say “total waste of money?” No matter how you slice it, no matter how important Larry has contributed to the team, unless he DIED, then those streamers should have no place in any school budget.

Another while watching the TV on Italianni’s…

“Where one has fallen, many shall rise”*

t-shirts. I’m speechless.

I can’t help but remember the days when La Salle was a dominant team in the UAAP and the Ateneans kept on saying that the reason La Salle was so good, is because the school focused too much on basketball alone. It was suggested that they let all other aspects of the school suffer just so they can get those game-winning players.

I won’t deny that possibility or [even] probablity, but that’s not the point. My point is that with all these streamers, t-shirts, intentional publicity, etc. I dare Ateneans say that we ourselves are not too focused on basketball. JESUS H. CHRIST!; why don’t we look at ourselves these days!

Did these people know that there was an Ignatian mass at the highschool? I didn’t see any streamer of that. I would like to think that mass was much more important than any game or person as it symbolizes a very spiritual aspect of the school itself. I don’t even have to say that the primary purpose of any mass is that you’re giving glory to our Creator.

But I hear there are rosary sessions. That’s good to hear. I wonder if there will be novenas in the near future? Sure, we don’t really pray seriously for world peace, or for more less-fortunate people to get into schools like ours. I really doubt that most Ateneans pray to be true “men for others,” or the nation’s welfare. But we can sure organize a last minute prayer rally so we can beat the shit out of our UAAP opponents!

There’s no room for double standards in this world. One standard will be enough thank you.

As I’ve said countless times before, I really feel sorry for the team, because I can see that they are genuine players. They do step up and are good at what they do. It’s such a shame that the school itself is tarnishing that with senseless gestures. From looking down on other schools, to criticizing other shools – when now, they’re doing the exact same thing!

The players have a lot of latitude in their academics now. I believe that before, they were particularly were proud of the players’ balance between sports and knowledge. I don’t see that now. I personally don’t think it’s wrong to do that. But schools who did it never pointed at other schools who did. And Ateneo was probably the first to do this… out of spite. Now they’re just like the rest, they can’t say the same things they’ve said before. They’re slowly giving their players the same special treatment which they accused other schools of in past years. Not that I think it’s right or wrong, but if Ateneo had said that it was strict about it’s education before, then they should’ve stuck to it till now, else should’ve just shut up about the other schools in the past.

Kakatawa nga kse pati mga bukambibig ni Fr. <name omitted> (Ateneans, you know who I’m talking about) puro UAAP nalang. Again, there’s nothing wrong with being a basketball buff. Hell, priests can paint their faces during games if they wanted to. Praying for the team also is ok, but there is such a thing as “moderation.” I distincly remember that the gist of one of his homilies; depicted the team’s upcoming battle similar to good vs. evil (of course he didn’t say that directly). That really turned me off. Aside from the distasteful interpretation, there is a part in the mass for “special intentions” – where they should’ve addressed the team or whatever else Ateneo needed/wanted. Using a homily for it is overkill. What ever made him think that discussing the team was better than discussing God?

If Ateneo wins, we’ll know the team deserved it… but can we say the same for the school?

And in case you’re wondering… I did spend my highschool and college days in Ateneo. But as much as I admired the education and cleanliness (oh and dont forget the fine women hahaha) I never understood the “culture.” And in light of these current events (the streamers, etc.) many Ateneans share my sentiments and dissappointment in the Ateneo administration, or whoever the hell was in charge of wasting money. Amazing how some people hedge when asked for money for sustainable and worthwhile projects, but don’t even blink when it comes to giving millions for the UAAP.

It’s really such a shame, there’s nothing to hate about the team, they’re hardworkers and seem humble enough. But seeing the culture of this school which cheers for them, I can’t really say I want them to win. Not because I find them underserving, but simply for the greater good: I’d rather a bunch of people suffer (the team) and result in a more humble school culture – rather than giving the whole school population a reason to continue such a twisted culture.

I guess I truly am overreacting, it’s just that Ateneo seems to be the logical choice when I have a family of my own. As much as I want the education for my child, I’m not quite sure about the human formation part of it anymore. I shudder to think what kind of person he/she might turn out to be if this keeps up.

  1. again, i think you’re psycho.

since when did putting out streamers for an injured person and organizing prayer events constitute arrogance?

maybe you should try watching one of the games and see how much the players appreciate the support of their “arrogant school”.

and maybe, just maybe, your own prejudice about “ateneans” are coloring your every judgement of what the ateneo does. we don’t even know who paid for the banners and shirts… malay mo alumni.

anyway, medyo over nga. sabi nga ni larry, parang patay na daw siya. labo.

  2. You’re right, maybe alumni nga… sana alumni nagwaldas ng pera na iyon. Tama ka din na hindi “arrogant” yung streamers (although wrong) I’ve corrected na my post reflecting it. =)

I also am not contesting if the team appreciated it, anyone will appreciate it, even me (if I was in their position). I’m just saying that the particular method used was not the best way to build team spirit… ESPECIALLY how Ateneo can get “holier-than-thou” towards other schools with their “methods.”

Hindi malabo kse si Larry na mismo ang nakarealize at nagsabi =)

And it’s “Ateneo” honey, not “the Ateneo.” Unless there’s the word “University” somewhere in the same sentence, it’s simply WRONG. Hell, even UP, FEU, UE, et all. never use it unless they say the acronyms in their long form.

But don’t worry, I do try to keep check if it’s just my being pissed that’s doing the talking. If it was, I’d STILL hate the team. However, I’ve come to realize their earnestness. I wish in time I could do the same for the school… if it gives me a reason to do so.

  3. Hehe. Same thing I was thinking, but of course it would be rather obvious that since I come from UP, lalabas sour grape ako. 😛 Ateneo has this hardcourt in memoriam thing and my school doesn’t even receive the subsidy it deserves for more classrooms and better facilities.

Hell, we don’t even win!!! 😛

  4. i stand by my opinion that your generalized issue that makes you say ateneans are “arrogant” will never be “proven wrong” from you point of view… UNLESS, you start quantifying and concretizing your issues.

until then, you will always find fault in everything the school does that is out of the ordinary. this is just an example.

and the ateneo team used to NOT WIN, too. for like, 14 years. so maybe madaming perang naipon para sa kind ng hulabaloo na yan. hahahahahahaha.

  5. oh and by the way, i once did a sharing during homily… it was about prayer and it’s siilarities with SHITTING. it was quite well received.

i think generally when you give homilies, you make it so that the people you are talking to can relate to what you’re saying. so maybe that’s why some priests choose the team as a topic, a source of inspiration maybe…

and YOU hypocrite. hahahaha. you don’t even like praying, going to mass, etc! yet here you are rallying against ateneo’s homilies and prayer sessions for the team! EWAN KO LANG HA. how can you propose to say that kind of expression of spirituality is wrong kung ikaw mismo walang prinapraktis na spirituality?

ay, hindi na matatapos to. see you at dinner (dinner pa din diba?) send you the resto’s number.

  6. nyahahaha! nakuha ko link na ito from rita’s lj. anyway. my two cents: kakaiba nga ang maging atenista.

or baka naman ito ang ibig sabihin ng magis? ewan. i don’t like the publicity, the tarps EVERYWHERE.

and come on. i honestly think that God is waaaay too busy to meddle with basketball games or something. sa atin lang talaga yan. whahahahahahahahahaah.

at kailangan ko pang gumawa ng reaction paper tungkol sa fahrenheit 9/11.

haha, no streamers and tarps for that too!

  7. My convictions don’t really come from my issues anymore. Especially here – I’ve asked for second opinions from other people kse I know very well that I do have a biased point of view. But surprisingly you are the ONLY ONE (so far) I’ve met who actually stands by Ateneo (and I mean all the way) when it comes to this hehehe.

Minsan I can’t help but think both of us indeed have issues, but yours actually may be bigger when I see you taking such a stance. Again, school spirit is fine, but there should be limits. Frighteningly, when I hear you argue for Ateneo, you begin to sound like a “fangirl.” A fangirl is someone who defends a brand by the tooth regardless of the reality of circumstance surrounding it.

The homily you gave still related to the divine ultimately. If it had been about sex and prayer, it wouldn’t make any difference. But simply giving as sermon about how we should beat the other guys, without any hint of the divine (or insulting the context of such), I’m sure you wouldn’t stand for that.

Yes I probably am a hypocrite (or “a tarnished hero – A TARNISHED… HERO. as you would say hahahah). I don’t go to church often, becuase I know my appreciation of it (and Religion) is inherently flawed. But I have the respect to not mock any of them if I can help it, nor have I intended to go against principles I’ve already set for myself (the school has violated both IMHO)

I already said that I’ve come to gripps with the team. That’s a big thing for me. It’ll probably take time for me to accept the schools intentions (but never in the context of the UAAP). As you said, my issues proabably will prevent me from doing so. But I’m open to the possibility of seeing the good if it presents itself. You on the other hand are totally unwilling to even admit the blatant wrongdoings that need rectification. And moreso SUPPORT and justify them. You tell me: am I the only one with issues here?

Lemme make one thing straight: If you argue about anything enough, you can proabably defend anything as right (or wrong)

But just take a look at the terms “culture of arrogance” and “UAAP overkill,” they’re right there at face value for everyone to see, and even most Ateneans are admitting it. “Me ipagyayabang kse,” as I often heard when I was in college.

Come on Jem, I’ve already given the team the credit they deserved. Must you also insist that I see the school the way you see it? No thank you.

Yes dinner pa rin, text kita kung susunduin kita or since nasa area mo na baka pede magkita na doon.

Have a say
