Modding chips now illegal in UK

Guess that’s that, everybody better start migrating to Asia and partake of our blatant acts of piracy… er – modding!.

Hawking on the black-hole information paradox

The Euclidean path integral over all topologically trivial metrics can be done by time slicing and so is unitary when analytically continued to the Lorentzian. On the other hand, the path integral over all topologically non-trivial metrics is asymptotically independent of the initial state. Thus the total path integral is unitary and information is not lost in the formation and evaporation of black holes. The way the information gets out seems to be that a true event horizon never forms, just an apparent horizon.

Ok, I had to take a nap after reading that. My head still hurts from lack of intelligence and understanding.

Monkey walks upright after a near-death experience

A young monkey at an Israeli zoo has started walking on its hind legs only — aping humans — after a near death experience, the zoo’s veterinarian said Wednesday.

“I’ve never seen or heard of this before,” said Horowitz. One possible explanation is brain damage from the illness, he said.

That definitely explains it. Humans live to bring about misery to the world and other species (including itself). In that respect, humans are definitely sick… and it has to be brain damage!

Krispy Kreme and glazed donut-flavored drink

If you’re an American, and still buy into that after the low-carb craze, then you’re proabably an idiot.

If you’re an entrepeneur, and put out a product such as that given the low-carb craze [considering you’ve already lost 45 points in the market], then you’re proabably an idiot too.

Come on! Take a look at those stats – the smallest drink contains twice the carbs and calories of a single donut! You have to be crazy to think that will catch up!

Microsoft bought Lookout

After the wake of Apple’s announcement of Spotlight in Jobs’ keynote speech, much talk suddenly became apparent with regards to Lookout being bought by Micro$oft.

Lookout is software designed to “fix” the search problem that MS Outlook has. Search in Outlook is near-useless as it takes forever, and doesn’t even give the desired results.

Though the article is obviously biased and very angry, there is one thing that the author forgot to take into account. I don’t think MS bought Lookout to shut it down and leave Outlook crippled.

Instead, if you’ve watched The Pirates of Silicon Valley, then you won’t be surprised that MS probably bought the software, to analyze the code, and to integrate it with Longhorn. After seeing what Spotlight can do, They’re pretty much backed up against the wall to meet deadlines (for marketing positioning).

I dunno if this is a good or bad thing. As an end-user I just want an OS that works, let the big boys fight about copycats and copyrights (and all that jazz). As long as the OS I eventually use gets the job done, I couldn’t care less about their methods.

My 2 cents regarding that “unethical competition” (if it is in fact an issue) is that it doesn’t endanger development, but forces it. If a developer makes something revolutionary to the market, and no once is able to catch up, then the developer will not feel any pressure to revolutionize further. Of course they still are free to do so (if inspired), but that’s hardly similar to the “inspiration” of being “on your toes” all the time.

Have a say
