Played a couple of games during my “blogging absence”

  • Battlefield 2
  • F.E.A.R.
  • Far Cry
  • Gun

Here are my thoughts on each of them…

Battlefield 2

According to the Internet, this is got to be one of the must have games a gamer has to have. I would have to add a vital condition that the gamer should love strategy type games.

It is very realistic as far as getting hurt, etc. is concerned but there’s no friggin’ story! I guess I should’ve researched more, but I was thinking it was like Medal of Honor or something which was a first person shooter but had some semblance of a plot and storyline (no matter how cheap it was).

This game on the other hand didn’t have one – apparently, it was specifically made to cater to the multiplayer or RTS people. So after playing a level, I uninstalled it immediately.

F.E.A.R.

Fear was a good attempt. Looking back, the story wasn’t all that cheezy, and the graphics were good. But the gameplay was too repetetive, the maps looked the same. The upside was the cut-scenes which I must admit were pretty interesting, but when everything was revealed, it really left you hanging… not in a good way.

Far Cry

The story here is pretty decent, but the main voice acting sucked! Made me feel like a Beverly Hills jock was running the show. A Beverly Hills ex-marine at that! Seriously, it was like Bill and Ted’s Jungle Adventure.

But again, the plot was very much tolerable, but the thing that really stood out here was the graphics. Simply amazing! Aside from how awesome the maps were, you could really notice how optimized the engine was that it could deliver such detail. I remember when it first came out, that it was said to bring the GPUs 1 Graphics Processing Units to their knees, of course the newer ones would eventually run it like a piece of cake, but my machine had a harder time with the F.E.A.R. settings that Far Cry, and if you actually PLAY them, you’d really ask yourself why F.E.A.R. would go this slow when something infinitely better than it can run this fast. Talk about overhead.

I think this is a perfect example where developers should start really optimizing their games’ engines and not just relying on people to pony up some cash for a brand spankin’ new GPU, when there’s sooo much more stuff that still could be squeezed from the code.

Gun

This is a pretty cool game, and after beating it, I still found myself playing for some of the other missions I didn’t complete. The story and development is ok too. But still, (as with all the games mentioned in this post) nothing has matched my favorite storylines yet (e.g. The first Vampire the Masquerade, The Longest Journey, and Prince of Persia – Warrior Within.
