Might as well talk about the iPhone too

Since there’s not getting around the fact that all the talk in the coming days/weeks/months will be all about the iPhone, might as well put in my 2 cents on the matter based on what I’ve read in the internet.

Here’s a press release from Apple

iPhone will feature up to 8 hours of talk time, 6 hours of Internet use, 7 hours of video playback or 24 hours of audio playback.* In addition, iPhone will feature up to 250 hours—more than 10 days—of standby time. Apple also announced that the entire top surface of iPhone, including its stunning 3.5-inch display, has been upgraded from plastic to optical-quality glass to achieve a superior level of scratch resistance and optical clarity.

If this is true, then damn, that’s awesome! The use of glass is a brilliant idea – I just hope it doesn’t make the phone fragile and less resilient to [unwanted] physical impact.

As amazing as these specs sound, there are also some other “feature concerns” the iPhone reportedly has. I’m not sure as to the accuracy of the data on the list below, as it was posted from a Windows Mobile-centric forum. But assuming they are true and not just an attempt at sour-graping, here are my thoughts on the matter.

Virtual insanity

True to Jamiroquai’s lyrics, it seems that I’ve been on an OS installation frenzy.

Virtualization has made it so easy to test different OSes. Right now I got 2 variations of each of the three OSes – namely Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Ubuntu. Each having a working image, and an image from when I first installed them (base installation). This should make it easier for when I bollocks any of them up and need to “reformat.”

Add the default OS (OSX) and that’s seven OS variations to play with all in all. Here’s what my Parallels folder looks like as of the moment.

Symantec Brings Complaint Against MS to EU

In one of the comments in my past post, the commenter said I should focus more on tech stuff since blogging about the personal stuff can get quite… uninteresting. Although I don’t really understand what her conception of a “blog” is, I would say it was a personal journal unless specified otherwise. But yes, I do like talking about tech stuff too so how ’bout this post to call it even 😉

Symantec Brings Complaint Against MS to EU

linumax writes “Symantec has made a complaint against Microsoft to EC anti-trust regulators over the software giant’s entry into the security market. The “informal” complaint allows the Commission to consider whether or not an anti-trust case is merited. The Commission is the executive branch of the European Union (EU).” From the article: “The news comes on the day Microsoft announced plans to begin offering business users an integrated anti-virus and anti-spyware product called Microsoft Client Protection. A beta version of this product is expected to be released by year’s end. The company is already offering some customers a beta version of its Windows OneCare consumer security software. At issue is Microsoft’s plan to bundle its security software with Windows Vista, the next major version of the Windows operating system due next year.”

AppleTalk

Well, not the Apple networking protocol, but Apple stuff in general will be discussed here. Since I refuse to fully succumb to the cult-like mentality most Apple users have, I realize that some of my posts regarding anything Apple tend to be too critical, and are subject to debates.

So in a gesture of good faith, I would like to provide useful information about the said platform from my own experience.

What I will do now is simple: I will objectively list the counterparts PC software have in the Apple platform. Add some insights and some personal opinions, but nothing that can start a war or dissent from either side. I believe this would be important for people who want to “switch” sides but are hesitating to do so since they fear they might not be able to do apply their regular workflow, with their preferred software in the new platform.

But before everything else, let me say that I cannot give a proper assessment as far as value for money is concerned – as I get my software for free. But then, usually if you’re an Apple user – money is no object, you get it because Jobs told you to get it, and the cult seems to be happy living that way.

Ok sorry ’bout that, just one troll okay? Now for the article.
