After the need of making multi-session discs to be used with both MAC and PCs, I noticed a glaring flaw in Roxio’s TOAST Ti, which is supposed to be the Nero of OS X. It still is probably the best considering it’s feature-set, but I’ve stumbled upon an alternative called Dragon Burn
Slashdot has posted information on a cancelled contest of writing a Mac OSX virus to put to rest the recent debate of OS X being no more secure than Windows.
Now is it just me, or do I feel that people are just too damn defensive of OS X? I mean I love it. I’m using it. I can even claim that it is more “secure” than Windows. But I’ve never in my life assumed that it was invincible. And another thing, since when did it become a Apple vs MS thing again? The whole premise of the contest/post isn’t even valid since it should never had compared the two in the first place.
If I’m not mistaken, the article(s) that triggered this whole debate was from ZDNet (at least as far as [Slashdot]0 was concerned), which can be read here and here. They document Symantec’s claims of OS X’s increasing “attractiveness” of being a malware target.
In no way did I construe the article as trying to suggest any of the OSes being better than the other.

Security vendor Symantec is warning that Apple’s OS X operating system is increasingly becoming a target for hackers and malware authors.’ They go on to warn that the only thing that’s protected Apple users from exploits so far has been the small number of Macs on the net. The bummer here is that it was stated by Symantec, which easily could be construed as an act of furthering their own sales of AntiVirus software. But in general, friends and I have been discussing this before. That the reason OS X is said to be “secure” is simply because there isn’t enough interest in it for the malicious hackers.
I was messing with my font collection so I could check out Extensis’ Suitcase X1 (pronounced “eleven”). I ended up moving so much fonts around that I wanted to start from scratch.
Stupid me, I even deleted fonts from my /System/Library/Fonts folder. But not because I had a death wish. I already had copied the said fonts somewhere and just wanted to do some sort of a “clean install” of them.
The bad part was I couldn’t copy the fonts back. Permission errors abound (which weren’t really permission related) Suddenly my menubar acted weird, apps started crashing (probably because they couldn’t render the system fonts (because they were erased).
I had no choice but to reboot… but on reboot, I couldn’t get into any GUI… I was thrown into the Darwin commandline. Sweat proceeded to pour down my forehead as I was thinking that I may just end up like Joel and his Archive and Install adventure… which I didn’t have time for. Read More
The best post I’ve ever read all day about the whole Apple debacle.
It’s all very well being preachy about right and wrong, but come on if every crime, no matter how small, was punished to the full extent of the law the whole population would be living under house arrest.
For those of you who don’t know what the hell I’m talking about. There’s been quite some lengthy discussion about Apple suing some kids. A little over two months ago, Apple decided to finally put its foot down and act on some people who have illegaly distributed preview versions of its upcoming OS called Tiger.

Despite Apple having every right to take such a course of action, it seems to be gaining a lot of bad press – comparing them to Microsoft as a cold-hearted corporation.

Most noticeable is that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak himself, as well as other respectable Apple software developers seem to have taken the side of the defendants (to a certain extent).
