Hacking Multiply

Well, it’s not so much of a hack… or is it? By definition, it actually is – yet judging from how people like to define “hacking” nowadays, this is pretty lame… but I digress.

The short of it is that I made a “skin” for my Multiply page. The purpose of the exercise is to hopefully set it apart from the rest of the users which go the “template” way. Not that it really matters to me; social networking sites are always secondary to my main site. I’d even go so far as to say the only reason I sign up on such sites is to make sure no one uses my handle. I learned the hard way when someone took the “nargalzius” handle on AIM before me.

On iPhone 1.1.1 firmware

It’s really amazing, jaw-droppingly so, how people who have hacked/unlocked iPhones still go through with the 1.1.1 update even after Apple explicitly told them that they might brick their unit. I can understand developers/hackers who intentionally do it to test their unlocking software, I can even understand it for people who have bought iPhones with the 1.1.1 firmware already pre-installed (though they can’t do anything about that but wait for a newer update).

But for regular 1.0.2 users who have read the press releases – it’s beyond me why they would even try it. The “features” the new firmware gives, as impressive (or not) as they may be, are useless if you can’t get your phone to work in the first place. I don’t feel sorry for these people at all, if you lack common sense, then you deserve to get your unit bricked.

Lightboxing and Flickr

JC made me check out his installation of a cool WordPress plugin that does lightboxing. I decided to apply the same stuff in my blog – and modify it a bit to be able to link to the image’s Flickr page somewhat dynamically.

If you’re not interested in the details, then just spot the difference between these two lightbox-enabled links (I just hope it does work as I intended it to).

Here’s an image which I linked to Flickr

Here’s an image which I linked to the Gallery within my domian

LINK REMOVED (as the old gallery doesn’t exist anymore)

If you noticed the difference, and are interested in how I did that – read on… Read More

Symantec: Mac OS X Becoming a Malware Target

Symantec: Mac OS X Becoming a Malware Target

Security vendor Symantec is warning that Apple’s OS X operating system is increasingly becoming a target for hackers and malware authors.’ They go on to warn that the only thing that’s protected Apple users from exploits so far has been the small number of Macs on the net. Now that people are buying Apple products for ‘style over function,’ according to one analyst, Apple computer has become a target for new attacks.

via Slashdot

The bummer here is that it was stated by Symantec, which easily could be construed as an act of furthering their own sales of AntiVirus software. But in general, friends and I have been discussing this before. That the reason OS X is said to be “secure” is simply because there isn’t enough interest in it for the malicious hackers.
