AllofMP3 – did you know?

After watching Lewis Blacks’ “gay banditos” skit on YouTube, I decided to buy his albums. Hahaha, don’t you just hate it that I can now use the word buy without batting an eyelash? Anyways, the variable pricing scheme AllofMP3 has on its encodes made me realize something when I was comparing them with one another.

You see, when it comes to simple audio (as against music) I tend to pick the lower bit-rate to save on money. Because lets face it. A live performance by someone who simply talks doesn’t need much fidelity to be appreciated. Since I love comic acts so much, the process of analyzing a good price-quality ratio seemed very relevant to my predicament.

Of recent(ly acquired) albums

For the past few weeks, I’ve been collecting albums… must’ve acquired about 60+ as of now. They range from all sorts of genre (e.g. Cafe del Mar to Nirvana to Jars of Clay – to Nine Inch Nails to India Arie, you get the picture. Old and new, whatever was available.

I haven’t gotten to a third of them, but I thought I’d share the select songs to look for from the albums I did get to listen to. I wasn’t able to get the full discographies (translated: all the albums) of most of the artists, so there may be different versions of some songs (or even the same) which I don’t know about.

I’m basing this list of “cool tracks” on the albums I have… If you see the albums, then try these songs for size:

Nono pointed out that the 20D too, supports rear-button focusing (RBF)! This means that you can use the AE Lock (Exposure Lock) button [at the back of the cam] for focusing, and not be forced to half press the shutter button.

I’ve then since added some information about the function to my previous post.

This has a number of obvious benefits – mostly during sports/events photography where people prefer tracking using AISERVO. But in a practical sense, RBF is great as you can take your shot regardless if you’re focused or not. Normally, if you’re on AF (auto focus mode), you’d have to focus by half pressing – and as long as it’s not yet focused, you can’t trip the shutter.

This is a sensible approach, but can be frustrating at times: If you focus on a subject, and know that you’ll be taking another shot of them (assuming you’re not on continuous drive), you’d still have to half-press and waste time as the camera re-focuses on [probably] the same point (which is ridiculous if you think about it)

RBF allows you to trip your shutter regardless, so it’s a kind of pseudo AF/MF focusing mode, which I think is pretty cool and useful.
