Le Tiger

I’m in the process of taking the Tiger plunge. Right now I’m taking my time (better safe than sorry) backing everything up.

For those of you who don’t know, Tiger is the latest build of OSX that has been getting all the hype recently – a Longhorn killer so to speak, but I would keep those sentiments on hold until Longhorn actually debuts.

Anyways, my main concern is retaining all my data since I’m planning to do a clean install. So I’m trying to list down (and backup) all folders and files that I may need.

This post may be useful in the future when I plan to upgrade yet again. So I might as well list down the databases/files I usually use.

The easiest way is to backup your whole ~/Library folder (the ~ means user directory) Of course, you may have a bunch of MP3s there (your iTunes library), so I suggest backing that up separately. You may also want to backup /Library (in the root directory) for good measure… you never know if and when you may need it.

OS X stuff

About time I posted this for my own benefit. I always wanted to just list down the special shortcuts/commands/procedures for my powerbook, which I’ve used at one point in time. Since I’m posting it, might as well make it useful for other folks as well… so before I continue, here are some things to remember (for those of you who are new to this):

  • CMD is the Command button, shown as an apple and clover icon, depending on what you identify better with.
  • CTRL is Control button, also printed as “ctrl.”
  • ALT is the Option or Alternate button. Designated as “option” & “alt.”
  • FN is the Function button, displayed as “fn” usually at the bottom left of the keyboard.
  • POWER is the power button.
  • ENTER is the Enter or Return button

iPod photo

Ipod Photo

I finally got my iPod photo a while ago. Initial transfer was a pain even if it was via FireWire.

Some new stuff (aside from photo support of course) that wasn’t present in my 4th-gen. The colored screen is great. It’s like the first time I switched to color with the Nokia phones: at first you don’t think its a big deal, and continue to do so… until you start using a B/W again.

The package was pretty good as it had lots of stuff:

  • Charge/sync dock
  • AC charger
  • FireWire cable
  • USB cable
  • Belt case
  • Case for the belt case (well at least that’s what I call it)
  • iPod sock
  • Video cable
  • Earphones, software CD, etc. Read More

Fanboys, unite!

Slashdot has posted information on a cancelled contest of writing a Mac OSX virus to put to rest the recent debate of OS X being no more secure than Windows.

Now is it just me, or do I feel that people are just too damn defensive of OS X? I mean I love it. I’m using it. I can even claim that it is more “secure” than Windows. But I’ve never in my life assumed that it was invincible. And another thing, since when did it become a Apple vs MS thing again? The whole premise of the contest/post isn’t even valid since it should never had compared the two in the first place.

If I’m not mistaken, the article(s) that triggered this whole debate was from ZDNet (at least as far as [Slashdot]0 was concerned), which can be read here and here. They document Symantec’s claims of OS X’s increasing “attractiveness” of being a malware target.

In no way did I construe the article as trying to suggest any of the OSes being better than the other.
