Fast, clean and reliable iPhone backups

As iPhone users know, iTunes’ backup facility is sketchy at best; It can corrupt backups, it can be ridiculously slow, and on a personal note; I don’t like the idea of “trace files” creeping into a newly restored device.

So I’ve decided to outline a “workflow” I personally use whenever I’m up for a restore session. Everything here assumes a jailbroken device of course.

How it was before

On a 2.x device, the way you could get your AppStore apps’ settings restored was by using iTunes’ backup images – buggy as it is. There’s also the issue of bugs during normal usage; there have been cases of legitimate apps randomly crashing – and the only “cure” was to erase the app and reinstall it. This would’ve been fine, only they forgot to mention that when you erase/uninstall an app, that’s exactly what you’ve done – along with all its data.

Sosyal

I added a little “feature” on my site; links to all my Social networking accounts (or anything remotely related to “networking”). You should see it in the author box at the homepage. If you have accounts on any of those sites, don’t hesitate to add me. I promise to unconditionally accept regardless if I know you or not… except for Facebook, since I try to at least keep that for people I really know.

Despite having all these accounts, It’s worth mentioning that almost none of them are being actively updated (apart from Flickr and YouTube for storage reasons – and I’ve got Multiply and LiveJournal being updated automagically). The reason why I took the time to register, even if I don’t plan to using them, was so I could have first dibs on the “nargalzius” monicker/handle on those sites.

Zoom, just one look…

… and then my heart went boom!

Remember that song? Well, it doesn’t really have anything to do with this post apart from the reference of the word “zoom.” (and personally, my heart did go “boom” when I saw the awesomeness of what I’m about to discuss).

I’ve implemented a new “lightboxing” system in my site using the FancyZoom script.

For the uninitiated, a the term lightbox has its etymology rooted in photography, but sufficed to say, in “internet” lingo, it’s a script which is commonly used for toggling image magnification without having to leave the current page. I’ve been using it in my site almost every time I use a thumbnail (which will be demonstrated in a while). For a quick sample though, click right here.

Oh and if you’re reading this via RSS reader, I’d suggest you visit the actual page for this entry, else none of this will work.

Up in the Cloud

Yes, it’s intentionally singular.

For the uninitiated, “the Cloud” is the intarwebz; and just as .Mac or MobleMe would want to host your data in the Cloud, I found myself recently trying to accomplish the same thing.

This will be a long post, but I can say with a certain degree of confidence that the information here can be very useful should it be applicable to you.

I found this awesome site!

So an asshole friend of mine sent me a link. And now I’m sharing it with you because… well because I don’t want to be the only one that had to suffer watching it 😉

Warning & disclaimer

First… this is NOT SAFE FOR WORK! (thanks Ed!)

I don’t want to spoil the fun, but I also don’t want to piss people off that much; so I’ll ask you to do these three things before visiting the site.

  1. Use Firefox
  2. If you’re viewing this blog entry in a browser (and not an RSS reader), open a new browser window. Yes, a new window and not a tab.
  3. When you’re viewing the site, you can switch back to this blog entry’s window (or RSS viewer)

You don’t have to follow them, but trust me, if you know what’s good for you, you’ll do it. Don’t worry, I’ll explain everything in a bit.
