Oh Apple, say it ain’t so!

The best post I’ve ever read all day about the whole Apple debacle.

It’s all very well being preachy about right and wrong, but come on if every crime, no matter how small, was punished to the full extent of the law the whole population would be living under house arrest.

For those of you who don’t know what the hell I’m talking about. There’s been quite some lengthy discussion about Apple suing some kids. A little over two months ago, Apple decided to finally put its foot down and act on some people who have illegaly distributed preview versions of its upcoming OS called Tiger.

For a detailed scoop of the issue: http://www.drunkenblog.com/drunkenblog-archives/000369.html

Despite Apple having every right to take such a course of action, it seems to be gaining a lot of bad press – comparing them to Microsoft as a cold-hearted corporation.

For the buzz it has generated: http://www.drunkenblog.com/drunkenblog-archives/000473.html

Most noticeable is that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak himself, as well as other respectable Apple software developers seem to have taken the side of the defendants (to a certain extent).

Witch

GP introduced me to this nifty daemon/utility called Witch. It’s like an OS X command-tab (or Windows alt-tab) function on steriods.

The thing that made me prefer it over the default command-tab function is that it can list/access even the minimized windows in the dock (which the default function obviously can’t.

Accessing minimized applications have been very important to me since regardless of OS X’s Exposé, I still am kind of OC about screen real estate – and like hiding/minimizing a lot. Witch solves all the problems the limitation of the default command-tab function introduced in navigation, and brings a whole lot more functionality in application access.

I’ve now assigned it the alt-tab hotkey (like in Windows) – but I wish that the developer allow it to override OS X’s command-tab altogether.

Camino – extending your search

I’ve been a Camino user ever since Joel introduced me to it.

As I’ve mentioned before, if you’re an Apple Firefox user, then Camino is perfect for you since it’s basically the Gecko engine (which is one of the major factors that made Firefox a popular choice) programmed using the Cocoa framework.

There really isn’t anything that sets it apart from Firefox, on the contrary I think Firefox still has more “features” when it comes to the extensions/plugins available to it. But if you chose Firefox because of its browsing capabilities, then Camino is said to be exactly like it… only faster – much faster!

Joel actually made some benchmarks of the different browsers, and the results speak for themselves. Read More

There was news before that pre-2005 Apple portables/laptops had “w-enhanced” keyboard hardware. A hack was made available, which can enable two-finger scrolling on these trackpads.

The new 2005 Powerbooks have hardware scrolling features too, but do not necessarily mean they have the same type of trackpad as the pre-2005 models do.

Anyways, when news first came out about a month ago, I tried it. My system hung, good thing I prefer navigating using the keyboard, so that problem was quickly solved.

Today I tried it again, and this time it worked. But I found myself going back to SideTrack after a few hours. The rest of this post is input that I hope may help other people in trying out the said hacked drivers.
