Taken from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawkwings.net\/2007\/03\/01\/a-faster-way-to-speed-up-mailapp\" title=\"read article\"><em>hawkwings.net<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Get a considerable speed increase in <code>Mail.app<\/code> (and if you&#8217;re lucky, a smaller mailbox size as well) by performing certain <code>Terminal<\/code> commands.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Quit <code>Mail.app<\/code><\/li>\n<li>fire up <code>Terminal<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Do\/type the following:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<pre><code>$ sqlite3 ~\/Library\/Mail\/Envelope\\ Index vacuum .exit<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>If for some reason the single line method won&#8217;t work, then do the following instead<\/p>\n<p>$ cd ~\/Library\/Mail\n$ sqlite3 Envelope\\ Index\nsqlite> vacuum subjects;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Press Control-D to exit <code>Terminal<\/code>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In case you didn&#8217;t know, the <code>$<\/code> is your shell.
