I know I’ve had beef about Apple with regards to some of the stuff they do/release. And those points are always wonderful sources for futher debate… especially if you start bringing in the whole fanboy culture into the fray. Make no mistake – there are people out there who are so dense, that they still see Apple as this knight in shining armor even if they’re already taking it in the ass.

This time, I just have to say I’m sorely disappointed with what Apple’s doing the past few weeks. For those who didn’t know, they are trying to claim the whole “pod” name for themselves. What does this entail? Any branding that has “pod” in it is now in danger. And as far as I know, they’ve already succeeded and are now closing in on the “podcast” monicker. While this is probably a brilliant move as far as cutthroat business is concerned, I must say my disillusionment is in full effect. I can say without a doubt that Apple has become (or is well on its way to becoming) one of the big bullies in business. An evil empire, which was previously reserved for the likes of Microsoft.

The “Apple culture” the fanboys loved to preach was the fact that Apple, while small compared to Microsoft, will always value the interests of their end-users… hence Apple has always had a fierce group of loyal users – regardless of market share. Wether you admit it or not, this is the reason why Apple was able to gain traction and become a contender once again.

Of course this doesn’t mean they don’t innovate, they most certainly do. For me though, the company’s charisma, if there was ever such a thing, was because they really cared about the people. The innovation was because they recognized what people really wanted… and while part of that may still be true, what’s left of their “situation” is sorely disappointing.

Now for the legal side of it all, I have no idea what is doable and not, so I won’t even try to say things like “they could or couldn’t do that!” But even assuming that they’re well within their legal rights to do so, wether by a technicality or otherwise – the whole ethical issue involved with what their doing is embarrassing.

I hope Line6 (or anyone who has used “pod” way before Apple) sues their asses as well. Wether or not it goes anywhere, I’d very much like to see Apple spend too much in legal cases that they’d finally realize how ridiculous their agenda is, and drop it altogether.

As for the word podcast, we all know that Apple should be thankful that people dubbed audio webcasts as that. When they first introduced podcast support in iTunes, it was because the phenomenon had already started – they didn’t revolutionize anything as far as podcasts are concerned. 1 I’d attribute it more to the availability of broadband on a wider scale, and the fact that portable music IN GENERAL was becoming the norm. And this availability of bandwidth also made it possible to get video more easily – hence the availability of video-casts. Wether you had an iPod or not, people would still be making podcasts! So Apple owes it to the general population that dubbing such media as “podcasts” inadvertently identified people to their brand immediately.

And how does it repay the public for the possible boosts in iPod sales (or people switching to iTunes) after a few years? Yes friends, it decides to clamp down on the name and call it its own. The nerve!

I’d like everyone to remember Microsoft during the days of the monopoly/antitrust case. Try to remember all the factors which constituted that disapproval from the general public. Do you remember? Now take this from Apple: imagine trying to lock down a common word to your branding, and destroying everyone in your path. And don’t even get me started on that whole thing with Real, or how they dealt with the illegal Tiger distributions.

Can anyone please tell me which actions by which company seem more monopolistic now? And still people hate MS so much to this day, and think Apple is the silver lining at the end of the storm. I’m not a fan of Microsoft as well, but I certainly can appreciate the efforts they try to put out ever since the antitrust case.

Microsoft certainly still makes crappy, bloated software and an inferior OS, but a monopoly? This day and age, you’ve got to be kidding. Tell me how the whole IE issue years back is different from how locked down iTunes is as far as interoperability with the AAC format, with the iPod hardware, etc. etc. You can run Windows on a Mac, but Apple refuses to let Vanilla PCs do the same with OS X.

Take all of that, and tell me again which company is more similar to a monopoly here?

To sum up, I remember posting very early on how I wouldn’t be surprised that they will eventually tread a similar path people hated about Microsoft. Is it because big business has no choice but to do so? Maybe, but I really hoped that Jobs, with his amazing capacity to challenge bigger companies (Disney, Record Labels, etc.) could prevent the company from doing so. I guess there’s no escape.

Enjoy it while it lasts people, it’s not far along when they start milking people for all their worth and the fanboys will suck that bullshit all up just like a mother’s nipple.

Still, this wont deter me from upgrading from a MacBook Pro once the portable Merom machines come out. As I said, I love the technology Apple brings to the table, not the brand itself – that goes for any company as well.

Notes[+]

Notes

⇡1

I’d attribute it more to the availability of broadband on a wider scale, and the fact that portable music IN GENERAL was becoming the norm.
