{"id":502,"date":"2006-09-14T05:42:12","date_gmt":"2006-09-14T05:42:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nargalzius.com\/blog2\/http:\/www.nargalzius.com\/blog2\/archives\/2006\/09\/2006_09_14_1342.php"},"modified":"2017-02-08T05:28:41","modified_gmt":"2017-02-08T05:28:41","slug":"rewriting-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/nargalzius.com\/blog\/archives\/2006\/09\/14\/rewriting-history","title":{"rendered":"Rewriting history"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s a BukasPalad song arranged by my <a href=\"http:\/\/major9th.blogspot.com\" title=\"Visit GP's blog\">friend<\/a> as performed by the Philippine Madrigal Singers.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<!-- iframe plugin v.5.1 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"20\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/306058555%3Fsecret_token%3Ds-P9QZJ&#038;color=ff5500&#038;inverse=false&#038;auto_play=false&#038;show_user=false\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<p>Aside from being a splendid arrangement (and of course I always want to support any of my friends), there are a couple of facts I wanted to point out that merited it being posted on the blog.<!--more--><a href=\"http:\/\/major9th.blogspot.com\" title=\"Visit GP's blog\">gp<\/a>: <a href=\"http:\/\/major9th.blogspot.com\">http:\/\/major9th.blogspot.com<\/a> &#8220;Visit GP&#8217;s blog&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I actually have a claim to fame with regards to this song&#8217;s arrangement. <a href=\"http:\/\/major9th.blogspot.com\" title=\"Visit GP's blog\">GP<\/a> and I can claim without a doubt, that we started singing the <strong>correct<\/strong> pronunciation of the word <em>&#8220;hirap&#8221;<\/em> in the song.<\/p>\n<p>If you would listen to other versions, chances are you&#8217;ll hear the word with the inflection on the A instead of the I &#8211; which converts the word into a state commonly used as a descriptive element. This state is not how it was used in the song.<\/p>\n<p>As an example, taking the original pronunciation of <em>hirap<\/em> in the old recordings, it <em>should<\/em> take on the meaning cited in the following examples.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Hirap <strong>na<\/strong> tao<\/em> &#8211; People who are facing difficulty.<\/li>\n<li><em>Hirap siya maglakad<\/em> &#8211; He\/she is having a hard time walking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So the mis-pronunciation of the word <em>hirap<\/em>, when used in the line<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>&#8230;mga hirap na dinaranas<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Literally would either translate to either of two meanings:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The troubled experiences &#8211; which is still wrong because it should now be &#8220;karanasan&#8221; (and still wouldn&#8217;t make sense either way)<\/li>\n<li>The troubled people (you <em>can<\/em> use Hirap to describe this collective idea) &#8211; which renders the rest of the sentence senseless because you&#8217;re waiting for something to finish the idea. Mga hirap&#8230; na ano? The people that what? It then should be &#8220;mga hirap na _du_maranas <strong>ng<\/strong> <code>insert something here.<\/code> I&#8217;m not even sure if my Filipino is right at this point&#8230; but simply put, either way is wrong for the purpose of the line.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>Hirap<\/em> as used in the song was supposed to a noun representing <strong>trials or tribulations<\/strong> &#8211; and <em>that<\/em> should have the inflection on the <em>I,<\/em> not the <em>A.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Anyways, <a href=\"http:\/\/major9th.blogspot.com\" title=\"Visit GP's blog\">GP<\/a> and I made it a point to sing it this way when we were in the Music Crew of <em>Days With The Lord,<\/em> which eventually caught on. I&#8217;m not certain as to how far our &#8220;modification&#8221; has gone, but I can say if you hear it sung correctly, I <strong>guarantee<\/strong> you that was because of us!<\/p>\n<p>Now that the Philippine Madrigal Singers sing it that way (and hopefully use that version a lot) I guess one man (in our case, <em>two<\/em>) <strong>can<\/strong> make a difference.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s a BukasPalad song arranged by my friend as performed by the Philippine Madrigal Singers.
