I forget exactly how it was connected to the scriptures… probably one of the clans settled there at some point in time. I did however, identify with Indiana Jones hehehe.

Like the structures in Egypt, one can’t help but admire the way the the Nabateans (natives of Petra) created such an effective sewage system. The entrance to the city is a downward path, along a canyon. Obviously the water that passes through that canyon will easily enter and destroy everything in its way (the village/city inside) – hence the Nabateans’ need to control the water. They became the strongest society during their time because of their ability to find and control the H2O in the desert.

There are a lot of things to be seen inside the city proper, all of which, even we didn’t have time to go through (our guide says you needed at least 2-3 days to go over all the features of Petra). But the most significant structure is the Treasury which is a temple carved into the side of the mountain. The facade of that temple is what we usually see in television, or the movies (e.g. Indiana Jones) whenever there is a reference to Petra.

About half of the day was spent in Petra… we walked from the hotel to the entrance, into the canyon, to the city and back – easily a 2 kilometer walk (minimum). While the walk was best for absorbing the information given by the tour guides (and best for photography for obvious reason), upon returning my feet and legs were jelly. You should be used to walking and hiking if you want to go in and out of Petra without any problems – otherwise, I’d suggest you spend the 2USD for the carriage ride (at least for the return trip).

The Trip Back

We returned to the hotel and gathered our bags from storage and went on our way back to Aman. We stopped midpoint in a gasoline station with a restaurant, where we finally got to try Jordan’s specialty dish (which is basically lamb) and we weren’t disappointed. It was better than lunch the other day.

We returned to the Regency and got new room assignments and that basically ends the day as far as I know… so It’s now just mass, dinner, and rest. Unless we end up gimmicking – which I probably wont be a part of since all our days are just so damn tiring. Take that and the fact that I’m used to 10 hours of sleep, need to organize my photos taken for each day (I think I’m past the 800 picture mark as I write this, but I don’t intend to do the math just yet) and of course try to write down whatever I can remember from the days past whenever I get the chance to. And believe me, finding time to pull out my laptop to jot down a quick blog post is not as easy as it sounds, even when in the hotel.

Before I wrap this post up, let me just share something father said a while ago in his Homily. That behind all these magnificent works of men, there is God. That the marvelous achievements we’ve made as human beings, should not diminish the need for the divine… we should be thankful for the divine – that we are able to achieve such great feats.

I give that last statement a couple of days before I [probably] lose the hype, but really it sounded really profound!

WARNING: these posts have not yet been proof-read.
