I must admit that it was a very impressive match. The Eagles definitely deserved that win as everyone indeed stepped up without Mr. Fonacier.

I was able to watch the last seconds of the 3rd quarter and the whole 4th through a TV – the group was in Italianni’s after singing at a wedding in San Agustin Church, Intramuros.

People I particulary enjoyed watching were Intal, and of course Mr. Tenorio. Though LA made the game winning shot, I couldn’t deny that Intal was an integral performer at the last quarter.

Again, congratulations to the team.

UPDATE:
I will concede that this post is biased or even an overreaction. I will just trust the readers to excercise proper judgement of the deeper meaning I wish to convey. Indeed the claims are probably towards specific groups or people, but I won’t go that deep as it is not my intention to destroy reputations. Suffice to say, they should know who they are, and facts cannot manipulated or denied.

Having said that – it doesn’t let the school off the hook (and I’m not talking about the team but the school).

It started when we were to meet on the school grounds before going to the wedding.

“Larry this one’s for you!”

Double-u tee ef man!? Friggin streamers!? Can you say “total waste of money?” No matter how you slice it, no matter how important Larry has contributed to the team, unless he DIED, then those streamers should have no place in any school budget.

Another while watching the TV on Italianni’s…

“Where one has fallen, many shall rise”*

t-shirts. I’m speechless.

I can’t help but remember the days when La Salle was a dominant team in the UAAP and the Ateneans kept on saying that the reason La Salle was so good, is because the school focused too much on basketball alone. It was suggested that they let all other aspects of the school suffer just so they can get those game-winning players.

I won’t deny that possibility or [even] probablity, but that’s not the point. My point is that with all these streamers, t-shirts, intentional publicity, etc. I dare Ateneans say that we ourselves are not too focused on basketball. JESUS H. CHRIST!; why don’t we look at ourselves these days!

Did these people know that there was an Ignatian mass at the highschool? I didn’t see any streamer of that. I would like to think that mass was much more important than any game or person as it symbolizes a very spiritual aspect of the school itself. I don’t even have to say that the primary purpose of any mass is that you’re giving glory to our Creator.

But I hear there are rosary sessions. That’s good to hear. I wonder if there will be novenas in the near future? Sure, we don’t really pray seriously for world peace, or for more less-fortunate people to get into schools like ours. I really doubt that most Ateneans pray to be true “men for others,” or the nation’s welfare. But we can sure organize a last minute prayer rally so we can beat the shit out of our UAAP opponents!

There’s no room for double standards in this world. One standard will be enough thank you.

As I’ve said countless times before, I really feel sorry for the team, because I can see that they are genuine players. They do step up and are good at what they do. It’s such a shame that the school itself is tarnishing that with senseless gestures. From looking down on other schools, to criticizing other shools – when now, they’re doing the exact same thing!

The players have a lot of latitude in their academics now. I believe that before, they were particularly were proud of the players’ balance between sports and knowledge. I don’t see that now. I personally don’t think it’s wrong to do that. But schools who did it never pointed at other schools who did. And Ateneo was probably the first to do this… out of spite. Now they’re just like the rest, they can’t say the same things they’ve said before. They’re slowly giving their players the same special treatment which they accused other schools of in past years. Not that I think it’s right or wrong, but if Ateneo had said that it was strict about it’s education before, then they should’ve stuck to it till now, else should’ve just shut up about the other schools in the past.

Kakatawa nga kse pati mga bukambibig ni Fr. <name omitted> (Ateneans, you know who I’m talking about) puro UAAP nalang. Again, there’s nothing wrong with being a basketball buff. Hell, priests can paint their faces during games if they wanted to. Praying for the team also is ok, but there is such a thing as “moderation.” I distincly remember that the gist of one of his homilies; depicted the team’s upcoming battle similar to good vs. evil (of course he didn’t say that directly). That really turned me off. Aside from the distasteful interpretation, there is a part in the mass for “special intentions” – where they should’ve addressed the team or whatever else Ateneo needed/wanted. Using a homily for it is overkill. What ever made him think that discussing the team was better than discussing God?

If Ateneo wins, we’ll know the team deserved it… but can we say the same for the school?

And in case you’re wondering… I did spend my highschool and college days in Ateneo. But as much as I admired the education and cleanliness (oh and dont forget the fine women hahaha) I never understood the “culture.” And in light of these current events (the streamers, etc.) many Ateneans share my sentiments and dissappointment in the Ateneo administration, or whoever the hell was in charge of wasting money. Amazing how some people hedge when asked for money for sustainable and worthwhile projects, but don’t even blink when it comes to giving millions for the UAAP.

It’s really such a shame, there’s nothing to hate about the team, they’re hardworkers and seem humble enough. But seeing the culture of this school which cheers for them, I can’t really say I want them to win. Not because I find them underserving, but simply for the greater good: I’d rather a bunch of people suffer (the team) and result in a more humble school culture – rather than giving the whole school population a reason to continue such a twisted culture.

I guess I truly am overreacting, it’s just that Ateneo seems to be the logical choice when I have a family of my own. As much as I want the education for my child, I’m not quite sure about the human formation part of it anymore. I shudder to think what kind of person he/she might turn out to be if this keeps up.

Ok first off, I would like to congratulate the Blue Eagles for winning the game this afternoon (evening?) against Adamson.
